KERIN DURFEE

FOR

NORTH DISTRICT

BRINGING BURLINGTONIANS BACK INTO POLICY AND POLITICS.

As a North District resident, with a BHS student at home, a growing tax bill and concerns about COVID recovery for business and families, I understand the day-to-day struggles we face as Burlingtonians. I will bring the voices of the constituency back to City Council meetings.

WHY I'M RUNNING: Welcome

I’m running for City Council for the North District to help bring the voice of the people back to the City Council, I’ll work well with the Councilors from Wards 4 and 7 as I know and respect their commitment to their wards and Burlington as a whole. Every day, as I interact with community members, albeit from a distance during these surreal times, I have the privilege of listening to the issues that matter most to New Northenders and the challenges they face in their everyday lives. I have devoted decades to community service and understand that the challenges many face can be addressed by responsive leadership who never forgets who elected them and why.

THE CORNERSTONE OF MY

PLATFORM IS PUBLIC SAFETY.

Here in the North District, people still need to understand the plan for alternative services to fill  our community’s needs as the size of the police department decreases. As I work through this with the joint committee that consists of the police commission and the public safety committee, I understand the need to proceed carefully. Together, we have enlisted professional support through an RFP process. It is through this process that we will be able to make informed decisions, understanding both the needs and desires of our community, as well as the daily operational and administrative duties of the Burlington Police Department. I’ll speak up on racial justice, inviting more voices to the conversations happening at a city level. We need to create a safe space for the voices that are not being heard and acknowledge the fact that we need to work together to create a community that is an example of what it means to eradicate divisions built on racist foundations.

TAXES AND SMALL BUSINESS

Property taxes are also at the forefront of this campaign. Knowing the school bond will take effect next year, and that our community will still be recovering from the economic impacts of the pandemic, it’s important that a voice committed to fiscal responsibility, with experience in financial management and recovery, is at the table. For our community to thrive, we must support local businesses and encourage and empower greater business development from all corners of our community. Now more than ever our small businesses need the support of our community,

NORTH DISTRICT IS MY HOME.

When I first crested the hill off of Route 2 onto Main Street, some 26 years ago, and got my first glimpse of Lake Champlain glistening in the sun, I knew I’d make this city my home. I’m grateful to be here and my work will always be reflective of that.
